Bekalan air disambung semula

Playgrounds to be upgraded soon
PETALING JAYA(Steets NST): Playgrounds can create and strengthen bonds between children from all walks of life, especially those living in high-density areas.
State assemblyman Haniza Talha (second from right) and MBPJ officials checking on the condition of a playground in Taman Medan. |
This is according to Taman Medan state assemblyman Haniza Talha, who spoke during a joint-visit with MBPJ officials to playgrounds in her constituency.
With that in mind, Haniza said that 10 sites in the area, including four playgrounds, have been earmarked for upgrading into futsal fields as youths prefer this sport.
Among the sites to be transformed into fustal fields are the volleyball courts at PJS 2D/11 and PJS 3/55.
Other suggested futsal field sites include five areas in PJS 1, one in PJS 2, three in PJS 3 and one in PJS 4.
"MBPJ has allocated RM200,000 to upgrade these to sites, but we would like other spots, including areas in PJS 1, PJS 2, PJS 3 and PJS 4 to benefit as well," said Haniza.
Meanwhile, several residents have lamented the poor conditions of certain existing playgrounds, some of which have become safety hazards.
"We are concerned over over-grown bushes near certain playgrounds as there had been several cases of encounters with snakes, which is certainly dangerous," said Esah Mohd Din, a resident in PJS 2D/11.
"Here in Taman Buana Perdana at PJS 3, the playground is sinking as there is loose soil underneath the playground mat," said resident Yuslan Yusof.
The bad news is, the condition of these playgrounds may not improve any time soon.
According to MBPJ landscape architect assistant director Nurbaiti Abdul Wahab, there is no budget to upgrade all the playgrounds, as there is a long waiting list of those with problems all over Petaling Jaya.
Nevertheless, she is glad that the playgrounds at PJS 2D/11 and PJS 3/55 will be upgraded soon.
Haniza said she was pleased that the MBPJ had accompanied her on her survey of the area.
"We are glad that MBPJ has come forward to discuss and follow us on our field trip, but we would need their co-operation to tell us the ideal ratio of how many residents of Taman Medan there should per every field.
"We don't want the public, especially youths, to fight over fields as it is obvious there's a lack of play areas in Taman Medan.
"Priority needs to be given to those who need it the most," said Haniza.
"Children from this area are mostly from the lower-income group and they can't afford to participate in expensive sports.
"As such, they rely on their playgrounds for leisure.
"Let's work together to help them.
"In return, the residents need to understand the difficulty in securing decent fields," she said.
Residents themselves were also called on to take good care of the playgrounds in their area.
According to Haniza, residents have been asked to be more responsible and stop turning playgrounds into their own gardens by placing flower pots, scrap metal and old abandoned cars there.
"In addition to other problems, this would also encourage unwanted activities to take place there too," she said.

Haniza gets council moving on her woes
PETALING JAYA (NST): State assembly representatives and municipal councils have been asked to co-operate to serve the public better.
This call was made by Taman Medan state assemblyman Haniza Mohemed Talha, who convened a meeting with the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MBPJ) recently.
At a press conference later, she said the objective of the meeting was for the assembly representatives to build a rapport with MBPJ and to discuss the process of future problem-handling.
"It was a positive and pro-active sitdown where we tabled various problems that affect the residents in my constituency," said Haniza, adding that the council had taken immediate action on some of the problems highlighted by deploying their officers to investigate on the very same day.
She said that a better understanding of the problem-solving process would also shorten the period needed to resolve issues, and ensure that Petaling Jaya residents would enjoy better amenities and live safely.
Among the complaints tabled was the issue of lack of cleanliness -- a sore point for Taman Medan, notorious for its many illegal dumpsites that have raised health concerns.
Haniza sought the co-operation of the MBPJ in investigating the matter and to arrest those who were guilty of indiscriminate dumping in the densely-populated area.
Haniza also raised the matter of Alam Flora's policy of only collecting rubbish from the expensive bins it introduced recently.
She said the poor may not be able to afford such bins and may resort to illegal dumping as a result.
As for ensuring the health and safety of Petaling Jaya residents, Haniza asked that the MBPJ scrutinise the sanitary conditions of many food courts in the city.
She cited examples of food courts in Jalan 223 and at Section 14, where the quality of food served must be assured to be safe.
She added that they should also be equipped with good and ample amenities like parking lots and public toilets.
Haniza had also raised concerns about an illegal sand-selling operation at Kampung Waiduri in Taman Medan.
She said the operation disrupted activities of an Islamic school nearby and was a major sore point for many residents there.
Haniza also took the opportunity to commend the MBPJ for some of the initiatives it recently undertook.
For instance, she lauded the council for introducing a free bus service to cater to the poorer sector of the community and senior citizens. The bus route, which would cover the perimeter of the city, would commence operations in June.
"It is a positive initiative by the MBPJ to manage the free fare bus line. In addition, they have also provided a van to help the disabled travel within the city free-off-charge," she said.
The MBPJ's decision to open all public halls to members of the community without any conditions except for the rental, was also seen as a welcome decision.
Haniza said the move would promote more social integration programmes, as well as offer the public a place to hold community events.
At the meeting, chaired by the MBPJ deputy mayor Puasa Md Taib, it was agreed that all issues tabled would be investigated and monitored constantly to ensure long-term enforcement and the resolution of problems.
Kampung Medan residents want toll plaza relocated
PETALING JAYA (Street NST): Kampung Medan residents approached state assemblyman Haniza Mohamed Talha to highlight their problems with New Pantai Expressway (NPE) Sdn Bhd.
Haniza said: "The residents say the road leading to Kampung Medan was only upgraded, and that no new road was built.
"Thus, they wonder why they have to pay toll to use it.
"They would like NPE to move the toll plaza to another location or be given resident toll rates."
She cited the example of Penang, where residents are given a toll rate of RM5 to use the bridge.
"Taman Medan residents pay RM1.60 to use the toll each time. Some of them find the rate too high.
"And now, we learn that NPE has plans to increase the toll to RM2 from Jan 1."
She said although the financial issue was a pressing one, concerns about safety related to the toll had arisen.
She said motorists avoiding the toll road were using the inside roads of Jalan 12 Taman Dato Harun to Jalan Besar Taman Medan.
As there are schools in the area, the lives of children are at risk.
"Bear in mind that there are four schools here and it's a congested residential area. During peak hours, many motorists use the smaller roads.
"Our second concern is the safety of cycle-lane users from Petaling Jaya heading for the Federal Highway.
"As part of their route, the motorcyclists must ride across five car lanes and this has caused many accidents involving cars and motorbikes."
Haniza said initial meetings with NPE had been fruitful, and that solutions were being considered.
"According to NPE representatives, their proposals on improving the situation, which were submitted to higher authorities, were rejected.
"But we are pleased with our first meeting with NPE and want to start afresh. Our main agenda is to serve the public.
Haniza said: "NPE is open to suggestions and their representatives promised us a follow-up meeting to propose their solutions to improve the lives of Taman Medan residents."
